For those of you wondering about us, we are a Christian home schooling family who makes our home wherever the Lord leads. Right now, that is Nairobi, Kenya.
(* Update – As of August 2013, we have relocated to the USA).
We take seriously the responsibility to “train up a child in the way he should go” – thus the development of this site. Through a book, the reader is made to feel whatever the author is trying to communicate, whether that be empathy, compassion for the sufferer or detestable ire for the villain. When we open our hearts to these influences, we are affected – for good or ill, we rarely remain unmoved. We hope by providing these wholesome reading lists that the entire family will cultivate their minds in a way that pleases the Lord and benefits man.
We take our definition of a “wholesome read” from Philippians 4:8.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
So, any and/or all of the books listed on this site (hopefully) fall into one or all of these categories –
True – Many of the listed books are based on true events, such as historical fiction, biographies and true stories. There are no fantasy-type books on our lists. If the books could not be true (even if they are fiction), we have not included them.
Just – Some books listed are accounts of events that have seemed terrible, such as slavery, war, and oppression of the poor. We strive to include only those stories whose resolution is in favor of the “right.” Good always wins!
Pure – It is a personal pet peeve to read a book sold as a “Christian” book, only to stumble upon entire pages within the book that have to be skipped because of inappropriate content. We take this one very seriously and seek to only include books that encourage purity of thought and heart among the reader.
Lovely – Many of our stories are just plain sweet books for the whole family. The “Wholesome Reads for the Whole Family” category include some of our family’s favorite reads that are truly lovely stories.
Good Report – We seek to provide books that encourage rather than discourage. We hope you put these books down at the end with a smile (even though some of them are quite sad at times).
So, this is pretty much how we define a “wholesome read.” Of course, everyone has different opinions as to what is appropriate for your own family. Please take the time to preview the books your children choose to read. You, after all, are the best judge for your own family. If you find any blatantly offensive content in any book listed, please contact us. It is our sincere desire to keep this site truly “wholesome.” Our lists will be updated frequently with new titles for free (or cheap) download so check back regularly for new “wholesome reads for the the whole family.”
** Please note: The “Mature Reader” category is intended for adults or older young people. There are references to the “betrothal kiss” in many of these books. Historically, this would signify the sealing of the betrothal or engagement between a man and his intended wife prior to marriage.
